Sustainable Living With Royal Golden Eagle

 About Sustainable Living

In the following era of modernisation, sustainable living has become a popular lifestyle trend among the public or an environmentally friendly lifestyle trend, if you often hear in various social media about the movement to reduce the use of plastic, it is an example of the application of sustainable living.

So, what is the sustainability Living?

According to one of the World's leading environmental organizations the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) sustainability living means understanding how our lifestyle choices impact the world around us and finding ways to everyone to live better and lighter in short, sustainable living means living an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Every aspect of the life you lead, always considering the impact on the environment, and the way you live your life. The concept itself, when viewed through the lens of environmental conservation, would mean a lifestyle that tries to put clear limits on the use of the earth's non-renewable resources, and avoid the use of products that have a negative impact on the environment. In practical terms, this concept does not lead to products that are 100% eco-friendly and sustainable, but rather seeks to reduce the adverse impact of human activities on the environment. This is done so that life in the future can still take place ideally, without having to deal with the adverse effects of environmental damage. These adverse effects can directly reduce the quality of civilisation, so that the next generation will have to struggle harder. This is a brief explanation of sustainable lifestyles, the main point of this article is how the Royal Golden Eagle Group, a world-leading company, plays a role in sustainable lifestyles. RGE, through one of the company, APRIL Group, has been honoured with the 2018 Sustainable Business Awards in Singapore. The Best Sustainability in the Community Award recognises the success of the FFVP in promoting fire-free villages through education, capacity building and infrastructure incentives for communities. The next award was a Special Recognition Best Flagship Initiative for the RER Ecosystem Restoration project. This award recognises the progress the project has made in restoring and protecting peatland forests on the Kampar Peninsula and Padang Island, in partnership with Fauna & Flora International and BIDARA.

RGE role in Sustainable Fashion

RGE (Royal Golden Eagle) manages a group of resources-based manufacturing companies with global operations. Our work ranges from the upstream, comprising sustainable resource development and harvesting, to downstream, where our companies create diverse value-added products for the global market. Our commitment to sustainable development, conservation and community development underpins our operations, as we strive towards what is good for the community, good for the country, good for the climate, good for the customer and good for the company.

RGE group of companies are involved in the following business segments:

Pulp and Paper – APRIL & Asia Symbol

Oil Palm – Asian Agri & Apical

Dissolving Pulp – Bracell

Viscose Fibre – Sateri dan Asia Pacific Rayon

Integrated Energy Provider – Pacific Oil & Gas

Basically in the market are made using synthetic fabrics such as nylon, polyester and acrylic, which make up around 60% of garment production are all forms of plastic produced from petroleum. Synthetic fabrics also do not biodegrade, meaning at the end of their life if thet not recycled they are either burned or disposed of in landfills, where they will remain for centuries. In response to this, Sustainable Fashion is as a solution. Sustainable fashion is a movement toward clothes that respect the environment and the communities in which they are produced. Practising sustainable fashion also means being responsible, not only for the production of the raw materials that become fabric, but also for the location and method of making the clothes, including the people involved.

There are 3 main things that must be considered in implementing Sustainable Fashion:

1. Raw Materials

In general, natural fibres are better for the environment than synthetic ones. Viscose rayon for example is made from wood cellulose, a natural fibre that is biodegrable and contains no plastic. Choosing a natural fibre is certainly a step in the right direction, but just because a fabric is natural does not automatically make it sustainable; it's also important to consider where it came from.

2. Production Process

Manufacturing raw materials and fabric can be energy and chemical intensive, from the production of the fabric to the dyes used to give colour. Sustainable producers must work to reduce emissions and recycle chemicals and waste, creating a circular production process.

3. Community

And the last but not least is to look at the broader impact to the local community. As well as creating jobs in our operations.

In these three key areas, APR utilises Raw Materials sourced from sustainably managed renewable plantations. Trees in APR's plantation forests through APRIL Group can be harvested within five years to ensure continuous availability of raw materials. In the Production Process, APR always endeavours to properly manage gas emissions and chemical usage in the production process. APR's manufacturing process operates with a closed-loop control system that helps recover 90% of the chemicals used in the overall production. APR's plant also operates by utilising renewable biomass energy. Clean manufacturing has been a priority since APR began operations. Continuous efforts to improve every aspect of the recovery process towards closed-cycle production and ensure APR's performance is within the upper quartile of existing industry standards. APR has also aligned its performance benchmarks with EUBAT (Best Engineering According to the European Union). This encourages APR to improve operations and technical processes. APR also endeavours to have a positive impact on the communities in which it operates. For example, APR partners with local batik cloth artisans to help them implement sustainable principles by using more natural materials, such as Rayon Viscose.

Sateri & Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) is an RGE group company engaged in the leading viscose rayon fibre business. Viscose rayon is a type of man-made cellulose fibre (MMCF), which is the second largest group of cellulose fibres after cotton. The advantages of viscose itself are made from 100% wood cellulose, biodegradable composition, comfortable and soft. The products of APR & Sateri itself are in the form of Textile Fibres, Yarns and Fabrics which will then be used as daily clothing such as clothes.

APR & Sateri's contribution to circularity is as follows:

1. Sustainable Industrial Plantation Forest

The natural fibre in APR & Sateri viscose rayon is sourced from sustainably managed renewable plantation forests. The abundant sunshine and rain in the equatorial climate is also perfect for good growth so the trees in these plantation forests can be harvested within five years.

It is not through deforestation that the plantation forest is developed sustainably that one of RGE's companies, APRIL Group, plays an important role in supplying raw materials to APR and Sateri. APRIL Group has received several national and international certifications for sustainable forest management. APRIL Group is also committed to eliminating deforestation from its supply chain and protecting forests and peatlands where it operates, as well as supporting best practices in forest management in all countries where it sources wood. APRIL is committed to respecting human rights and environmental aspects of its supply chain. The aim is for the company to be a good and responsible neighbour in local, national and global communities.

APRIL's Sustainable Forest Management Policy 2.0 (SMFP) was developed with input from the Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) and other stakeholders from civil society. This policy is an evolution of the SFMP 1.0 policy launched on 28 January 2014. It incorporates Royal Golden Eagle's (RGE) Sustainability Framework.

2. Chemical Recovery

Proven technologies in chemical recovery help in capturing and reusing chemicals and energy (which would be used to produce steam) in the viscose manufacturing process. More than 90% of the chemicals used in viscose rayon manufacturing can be recovered by adsorption and condensation methods, and the rest are treated by the best available techniques before being safely disposed of.

3. Renewable Biomass

The electricity used to operate the integrated production process is generated by renewable biomass energy, maximising energy efficiency throughout the mill process. These biomass by-products, such as black liquor from the pulp production process, tree bark, chaff and fibre sludge, generate enough electricity to power the production facilities and surrounding communities. By using this renewable biomass, the company can drastically reduce its use of non-renewable fossil fuels.

Certifiation

In Sustainable Fashion management, certification also plays an important role. Nowadays, the standardisation of assessment of the sustainable textile industry has evolved so that many aspects require certification from different agencies. The first step to getting natural fabrics certified is to prove that the raw materials come from sustainable plantations. At APR & Sateri, 100 per cent of the wood pulp is certified, the majority of the certificates are even issued by the international body, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Next up is a look at the fabric manufacturing process in a factory that minimises the release of gaseous emissions and the use of chemicals and energy on a large scale, while being responsible for the health and safety of workers and local communities. APR, which commenced operations in January 2019, is in the process of achieving this certification standard by implementing the construction of Solar Panels as a source of energy. This is part of APRIL2030's sustainability commitment to support the realisation of Indonesia's net zero emission roadmap by 2060. The solar panels will enable the company to realise up to 90% renewable energy use for the mill's needs. In addition, the solar panel development also aims to reduce carbon emission levels by 2030.

Finally, the product certification standard covers aspects such as the quality of products that can be easily and quickly biodegraded and do not contain harmful chemicals. At APR, the product has received the 'Standard 100' award given by OEKO-TEX. This proves that viscose rayon is free from harmful ingredients and safe for babies and children, and meets the requirements of annex XVII of REACH, US CPSIA and Chinese standard GB 18401;2010.

Impact on Communities

A more sustainable fashion industry must also take into account the way raw materials, fabrics and garments are produced. In addition to creating jobs in neighbouring operations, APR also aims to have a positive impact in the area where it operates. For example, APR has partnered with traditional batik cloth producers, to help them use sustainable viscose and natural dyes in their work.

And as part of its APR2030 commitment, APR will work with APRIL group to help eradicate extreme poverty within a 50km radius of the Company's operations.

The company still has work to do to realise the promise of sustainable fashion, but it's clear that viscose fabrics will play an important role in the future of the fashion industry.

APR's participation in the International Integrated Textile and Textile Products (TPT) Industry Exhibition, Indo Intertex-Inatex 2023

Since commencing operations in 2019, APR has continued to reinforce its commitment to sustainability by launching APR 2030 commitments, one of which is APR's commitment to be at the forefront of clean and closed-loop production processes in the Indonesian textile industry. Since 2022, APR's rayon fibre products have produced + 300,000 tonnes per year and have been exported to more than 20 countries including Turkey, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, the United States and Egypt. In 2022 Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) participated in the international integrated textile and textile products (TPT) industry exhibition, Indo Intertex-Inatex 2023. This makes it clear that APR's products are truly concerned with sustainable fashion. Participation in the exhibition, which takes place at JIEXPO Kemayoran from 29-31 March 2023, confirms APR's commitment to supporting sustainable textile innovation in Indonesia. In line with its commitment to sustainable fashion, APR also showcased its recycled fibre product "Finex", an environmentally friendly recycled fibre that can be used for everyday wear. In addition, APR also showcased its high quality and environmentally friendly rayon fibre product, Lyocell.

RGE's Participation in Paper Upcycling

After knowing a lot about how RGE Group participates for Fashion Sustainable, the author will also share how RGE Group participates for Paper Upcycling.

RGE also participates in Paper Upcycling, as we know the world's consumption of paper will never stop, it will always use paper for various products and will end up in the trash. RGE is taking a new approach in Paper Upcyling where it processes waste paper for reuse. RGE turns waste paper into valuable raw materials for various industries, reducing the need for pulp and relieving pressure on forests and ecosystems. This process brings new hope into paper waste, creating a circular economy by reducing waste and conserving resources. One of the RGE companies that involves pulp and paper products, RGE has an important role to play in encouraging paper upcycling. Efforts made to convert paper into various products have led RGE to invest more in its research. This is in line with RGE's commitment to sustainable living, encouraging a more sustainable approach to paper consumption. By implementing paper upcycling, RGE aims to promote a circular economy model within the industry, where resources are continuously reused and regenerated, thereby reducing overall environmental impact and contributing to waste reduction.

Sustainable Living is very important for human civilisation, it has a huge impact if we as humans just ignore it. Therefore, we must also take action for a better life, just like what Royal Golden Eagle Group has done in implementing excellent Sustainable Living. We can implement sustainable living starting from small things such as reducing the use of plastic waste, choosing fashion products that use sustainable systems. As consumers we must view sustainability as a very important aspect, in buying products we must make sustainability the basis for buying the product itself. We must support sustainable fashion, every dollar we spend will have an impact on what we will choose, of course sustainable fashion will be clearer for all parties, both consumers themselves and producers who produce sustainable products.
